The Street

Topic: FamilyPoems

“Don’t you ever cross the street.”
My momma used to say.
“For over there, across the street,
Is where the bad man stays.”
The trees were thick, the boughs hung low,
I knew she must be right!
For many days after that
My life was filled with fright!
The street was so narrow.
What if he crossed over here?
Oh my God! Is what I thought,
That would sure make him near!
Mustering all the courage I could,
To my closet I ran.
My childhood days were gone away,
It was time to be a man!
A tin star was pinned to my chest.
Next I loaded my guns.
Next came the rubber knife.
That man wasn’t gonna have fun.
Spreading my chest, I crossed that road ,
With a swagger to my walk,
My momma said that he was bad,
But could he talk the talk?
The trees loomed nearer and nearer,
Their shadows black as night.
I double checked the “loads” in my guns,
To keep away the fright.
My feet stepped into the grass,
That must have reached to my waist.
Suddenly, you know, the man appeared!
Towards the house I raced!
Since, I’ve never crossed that street,
That man certainly looked bad.
But there’s always been that nagging thought,
He sure looked like my dad!

From what i can see, this is one of the most subtly depressing poems i've seen.

Childhood innocence...who knows what his father was actually like.

Somehow it doesn't seem like a laughing matter to me...
