The Deer Hunt
The day broke fresh and clean, Frost bite in the air.
I cranked the ole 302 up, That deer had best beware.
I made to my stand so high, Up like a squirrel I went.
Excitement filled my mind.
Thru the brush, my wary eyes scanned, Searching for my find.
A tender young Bambi, Stepped into the clearing below
Cocking the gun , I pulled the trigger, Waiting for the blow.
Click! An empty chamber! How could I have been so blind?
Bambi took off with a start, Like he had a fired behind.
Down the tree, half mile away, I made it to the truck.
I knew it still wasn’t too late, With a little luck.
At last back on my roost, My eagle eyes were keened,
Suddenly low down in my guts, movement turned me green.
I hung the rifle on a branch, Back down the tree I tore.
Not stopping for fifty yards off, Until I left my spore.
Some movement off to my left, I turned my eyes to see,
The biggest buck I’ve ever seen, Stood looking back at me.
Reaching back, I felt for my gun, With memory, I cried a sea.
In the distance way over there, I could see it swinging free.
“Have a nice hunt?” Words I dreaded to hear.
“Sure” Is what I told my wife, Hoping she’d miss the sneer.
“See anything?” another quip. “Nothing.” is what I cried.
Now folks, what do you think, That I wouldn’t lie?

I used to tramp through the wildnerness pushing brush for the guys but then when the deer came out and got shot I would start to cry so I didn't pack a rifle for I couldn't shoot them you see I would rather just sit and take in their splendid beauty.
Great write

Does the meat feed you, does the hide warm you??Or does the kill just thrill you??...Am hoping this is not real and that you loathe hunting for sport.

well, im glad your gun was in the tree, i raised a fallow deer and her name was bambi, i live in a national forest and i love animals; on most occaisions more than people, i see no humour in this poem what-so-ever, hunting is not a sport unless the animals have guns as well, now to be funny maybe if you left your gun at home and was shooting pictures instead of animals.....maybe, maybe............ |
