Mermaid

A boy went to play on the beach after school. He felt so lucky to live near the sea. It was warm, and the afternoon sun played upon the rippling sea. Soon his shoes were off and hidden under the steps, and he was running toward the shining, inviting sea.

Ohhhhh, how good the sand felt as he ran his toes through it. The tide had long since gone out and soon he came to a little rock pool. Full of sparling water from the high tide, and teaming with life. Tiny fish were swimming, and crabs trying to get up the sides of the pool. The happy boy laughed as one crab almost escaped but fell back into the water!

Now he was kneeling by the poolside, and rippling the clear water with his finger. He laughed at his own distorted reflection! But then he fell back with shock at the sight he saw. There.....RIGHT THERE in the clear sea water was a tiny face looking up at him!!! Oh my god, he though. And looked and looked, but no, it was no trick of light and rippling water. The face of the most beautiful girl was looking at him from the pool. Hiding behing some weed, she looked, then hid, and looked.

Like catching a frog, the boy pushed his nand through the water, and as quick as a flash she was there......right in his hand!!!!! A girl??? no, a fish?? a girl fish!! he had a girl fish in his hand. Holding, holding tight for she was struggling. But as if hit by guilt he released his tight grip, and she just lay there, wet and sad, defeated. The top of a girl, with the tale of a fish!! oooooohhhh myyyyy god, he said out loud now. I have caught a MERMAID!!

The boy was not bad, and he said he was sorry to frighten his little guest. She smiled at him as if she knew what he was saying. The look of wonder on his face. For she was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen in his short life.

The boy introduced himself the best way he could, and told his pretty mermaid that he was so happy to meet her, and he said he would protect her for ever. She smile at him and sang a lilting song from the sea. The boy was the happiest lad in the world

The mermaid was gently placed back in the pool, where she would swim so fast for her new friend. Frollocking and playing and singing her beautiful songs. But then the pretty little mermaid looked sad, and pointed to the sea. The boy smiled and said that it was a wonderful place, but he would make her happy now, and care for her for ever.
The mermaid looked so sad, and the boy asked her what was wrong. She sadly look out to sea, and pointed to the horizon. But the boy was happy, he had found a new friend.

The mermaid was made at home in a special pool of her own away from the rising tide. Her new friend brough her nice food each day, and would sit by the poo and talk to her and tell her all his troubles and his happy tales too. But the happy songs of the sea soon turned to laments, and when the boy arrived each day his friend was always crying. What could be wrong ?? she had everything she could need??

The little boy was sad as he would hold his beautiful friend in his hand, seeing her fade from the wonderful pink, to a sad grey colour. She was dying. Bud if he allowed her to go into the sea he would never see her again in his life, surely. But he was a god boy.

One fine, sunny afternoon he went straight from school to the home of his little dying friend. H e was crying, sobbing, tears so big they splashed into the clear water. He took out his pretty friend, and gently kissed her. Crying and in deep sorrow he took her to the sea edge and released her. She slowly swam and then rested, got more strength, and swam more.

Soon the lovely little mermaid was swimming further and further out in the tide, and her friend waved goodbye, and knew he would never see her again. But he knew she was alive, and would be happy. His walk home was the lonliest time of his life.

He was 12 years old, and although the sadness overwealmed him, the boy went on with his life. Remembering his beautiful girl with the tale of a fish. The girl with the bluest eyes he had ever seen. The girl so pure......so pure......so pure..

The boy went through school and worked hard, and on the day he finished school forever, when he was 17 years old, he went to the wonderful golden beach. He kicked off his shoes and went to the water's edge. Soon teasrs were running down his face, as he remembered the first love of his life. His beautiful girl, his mermaid with the shining blue eyes. He was in such sorrow he sobbed and fell to the wet sand. Yes, he had finished school, made a start in life, but the one love he longed for was not there, she was five years gone.

Hey!!! don't cry!!! Said the voice. And as he looked up, standing before him was the most beautiful young woman he had ever seen. Her shinging pure blue eyes smiling at him. Her arm was round his shoulder, and she whispered......It's me..yes me!! I'm here for you my love. Look, I am a woman, and you are a man. No fish tail, she now had legs, and was so beautiful he could not believe his own eyes.

Is it you, he said, and looked and looked. It was!! she had come back for him. She told him that she had loved him all the time, but had she stayed in that tiny pool she would have died. He had shown his true love for her by releasing her to the ocean. As if by magic here she was. Perfect in every way. You loved me and through that love you allowed me to be free, to grow and live and be happy, she said. I am free, amd will alwayd be free, but I love you and now you will be free with me to live in ecctassy.

They walked hand in hand from the beach, and love and understanding as only they could have would take them to the ends of the world, and through their perfect lives.

Your words, your tale, haunt me. Said a friend, 'a single tear, eye to jaw line'. I thought I had no more. So why then do I look for him hoping to catch a glimps of him in verse. It's not to be, lest you are he. And oh, how I wish he'd come to me.
