Why?

Why

It would take you hours, which turned into weeks
You wanted to show your love
with pride you prepared your heart
for all to see, your creation, your dreams

When worked before, brush strokes would flow
with ease and fine detail, canvas filled
now here you sat with brush, palette, tears
heavy heart

How to show them just how you love them
can you transform your love to canvas?
show the most sincere feeling you ever had?
Of course you can, for mum and dad

Love flowed from mind to hand to canvas
this creation would be you, for them
your deepest most private feelings
expressed for all to share

It had to be right, yes, pure, perfect
each effort, correction, was statement
your love for those who loved you
stand back - smile - weep once more

It hung with pride of place
there, your all, your devotion, your thanks
thanks to those who created you, nurtured you
your statement of celebration

Then the wall stood empty
your love had been there but gone
but it was all for good
new times ahead, she goes where we can care

Smaller but full of family love
those gifts from years of kids growing
abound there, in places of honour,
all cleaned, and there, all say we love you mum

But that wall is still empty
oh not to worry - it's been put away
yes, for safekeeping, out of harm's way
we'll sort it, clean it, re hang

Now family members look, then look away
something not saying, hey ...c'mon, say?
but they cannot say
for they, those who care so much, feel guilt

The unthinkable done
your pride, your love, your joy
your hear and sweat, all gone - gone?
oh come on!! don't joke like this

It took me weeks, I cried, I felt, lived
Yes, I lived that life I laid with brush
it can't be gone, it can't be - can it?
you feel the loss, tears well

How the hell could they do this to ME
you feel anger, then pain, then betrayed
you gave it with love, it went with the trash
they THREW it out, just like that!

That gesture can never be replaced
it was one, never again to be re done
but gone it is, and see it as it was
it was pride of place, it was your gift of love

This purest gift lives in minds, and hearts alike
to those who saw it hang with pride
perhaps it lives with them even stronger
Remember our Gill's paining - it was good

And the two it was created for? do they think why?
no, they sit in dreams, and smile, talk
about their lives, their kids, their world
it hangs there in their world, beautiful work

For your painting lives to this day
as it was meant to be, still new, vibrant with your love
arm in arm they look and wipe tears
That's from our gill, our girl, our joy

i'm not sure i can express how i feel about this poem. it is beautiful, and it had me in tears; both for the painter you write of, and for you, who with this poem, express such empathy, a tender heart.. to me, this poem is simply, love.
