August Rain
No breeze a hint of mild rain no need to water
the plants on the terrace. Oak-leaves in the yard
pick them up they are pale, yellow and it is only
August. Silence is intrusive brings to attention
the slightest din making me alert and nervous.
My dogs are oddly absent three are in the barn,
the fourth, not yet accepted by the others, pretends
to be asleep under the kitchen table, resting its
head on my left foot that is getting numb from
being in the same position. A yelp from under
the table an express train of rain is coming closer,
the fridge shudder, stops, no light and the roar hits
the roof, silence is shattered into fragments, can’t
think for clatter, yet I welcome the diversion
silence was drilling holes in my head.
