With the grace of a gentleman
I sat with my heart on her bed
and tears begin to fall
as through it all
I remembered the last words
she said
You thought
that I was an angel
that I filled your every dream
You took me for something
I wasn't
Now, look, what you have done to me
You gave me years of lovin
You calmed all of my fears
You held me tight
through the cold, cold night
Now, what are you doing here
You gave me children
that loved you
You were my pride and joy
You stood tall through it all
Now, look, what you have done to me
The angel
that you fell in love with
is now wrinkled and old
her dreams are all shattered
but thanks to you
God claims her soul
I sat with the grace of gentleman
her hand in mine turned cold
