her white flag

Contributed by Cancer on Sunday, 21st September 2003 @ 02:35:00 AM in AEST
Topic: SadPoetry

she waves her white flag at the world
she never shows her face
just trying to hide from it all
her shelter found in isolation

her white flag still waving
but the world takes no notice
and another barrage of super models
leave her self-esteem in shambles

the smoldering remains of better days
when she didn't need the white flag at all
days when food wasn't an enemy
days when the mirror didn't make her cringe

her white flag is shredded, listlessly hanging
like she sometimes sees herself, in late night dreams
there just doesn't seem to be any way to win
and she can't even remember what she's fighting for

like a long awaited savior, sleeping pills promise release
a shelter, no pain can penetrate
and when the bottle is empty
she curls up on the floor of her foxhole
trying to block out the sound of the bombs
trying to ignore the war she never wanted

dead at 15, dead longer still
her still breath was belated by years
bitter sleeping pills brought the sweetest reward
washed down by a lifetime of tears

now, in some lonely cemetery
her unknown soldier's grave
bereft of flowers, it's only decor
is the tear-stained white flag that she waved

tragically beautiful, expressive and emotive - the concept is one often used but often made overly melodramatic or cliched, i think you created the right balance. excellent. Kate x
