Summer Storm

The sky is still
Dark clouds float overhead
Color so intense it hurts my eyes
I want to see through it
To know what is on the other side
The stars, the moon the sun
At first it whispered
Like a sweet lover’s caress
It keened and twisted
My hair moved across my shoulders
I looked around to see
But I saw nothing at all
The leaves are trembling
Like laughing coyotes
The branches bending
Strong graceful limbs dance
Teasing the piper’s song
From cricket’s uneven harmonies
Great gusts come up from the lake
Angry puffs of warm air against my cheek
The birds swoop and cry out a warning
I sit on the porch swing and wait
For clouds churning down from the mountains
Thunder rumbles and scolds me
The crickets have gone silent
Giant raindrops slide from clouds
Each one its own note
Listen, listen as they fall
My pretty flowers bend and bow
As if to some angry god
The rain a solid curtain now
Lightening rips the blackened sky
Thunder pounds its angry fist
The cat curls up next to me
Watching the rain race down the spout
Running in rivers to the sea
It’s letting up now
It won’t be long
A few more frantic gusts
One last flash and rumble and it is gone
Heavy wet branches breathe a sigh of relief
The sun comes peeking through sullen clouds
I walk through the glittering wet grass seeking
The gift of a rainbow
Left behind like a memory
A summer storm, hot and passionate
Full of noise and glorious ambition
But it soon passes forgotten as a dream
