Fallen tree on the ground,
long ago I sat as a child
on your brown, brawny roots
and heard your soothing song
whispered in the dry summer winds.
Now, I stand and brood
atop not your shiny roots,
under not your shady roof,
and hearing your song no more
but hushed winds from the lake shores.
But tree! here by me
where you used to be
is a new sprouting tree!
Your tough old self, though gone,
is reborn in this one!
The woods again sing their songs,
and the jolly winds in glee
wave and sway the green leaves.
Tree! you haven't been away,
hear them, hear them celebrate!
