on that same old park bench
feeding the lingering pigeons
smiling absently
looking back, inside himself
the old man, lost to reflection
recalling random scenes
but, always, over these thoughts
is the shroud of something dark
some troublesome forebodance
he tries to smile, and mean it
but, it always comes out wrong
wrinkles crease deeper
as his features harden in an expression of dread
he always feeds those pigeons
they are his only friends
his wife has died, his children have forgotten him
his small home, stained with memories of her
he hates to sit there alone
it always makes him cry, and when he cries
he feels old and broken
he can almost smell death now
breathing down his neck
mocking him with his constant presence
it's getting harder to care
on that same old park bench
feeding the lingering pigeons
smiling absently
he sees his fate approaching
gliding gently across the pond's calm waters
and still he feeds the pigeons, waiting
the dark figure floats before him now
slowly raising a dark arm, extending it to the old man
the old man looks up
peering blindly into the shadowy figures hood
and sees his wife's smiling face
nodding her encouragement
at the sight of her face
the old man's calm guise dissolves
tears sting his eyes as he drops his bag of crumbs
he whispers her name softly
and raises his hand to meet that of waiting Death
they found the old man's body on the bench
no one really knew him
only that he was there, feeding the pigeons, everyday
some feigned tears of sorrow for attention
as some folks always do
and the old man was buried without fanfare
gliding through pulsing worlds of color and light
time and space defied
following his guide as they travel through the realms
always peering forward
waiting to see his wife appear on the horizon
so that he may hold her again

This is an awesome write.... It is sad... The imagery here was very good. I could actually picture the old man and see the sadness in his eyes.

Its sad, yet a glimpse of hope seems to slip in and out in the poem. Good imagery. I liked it. |
