Diamonds will not bring her to heel
Nor will your wily stories
Or delicious kisses
That taste like cognac
She is too smart for that
With her violent hair
And eyes as black as coal
She has enchanted you
When you least expected it
Causing you to fall
And break your ankle
Now you hobble after her
On crutches and painkillers
Determined to win her
No matter what the cost
She wears that old dress
The one that reminds you
Of your dead grandmother
Leaning in to tell a secret
You steal a kiss and hold her
Until you see the stars in her eyes
And figure out that you’re in love
For the very last time
