I can hear my music.
I can hear it a lot.
It’s on volume twenty.
Twenty two.
Twenty two is deafening, but necessary.
I never listen to it at twenty two,
especially not when anyone else is home,
especially not at ten thirty at night.
My god.
I can’t help thinking.
My god, was I that bad?
I hated life.
I hated my father, most of the time.
I hated him because he was gone.
I hated him because he was here.
I wanted to die or kill or something.
I wanted anything that I could have in order to make it all stop.
I wonder if she wants the same thing.
I wonder if she’s thought of it.
Was I THAT bad?
Tenth grade was hard for me too.
I want to comfort her,
tell her it’s alright,
tell her that it’s all for the best
and that mom and dad really do know what they’re talking about.
I wonder how long it will be before she is drawn into
the fabulous world of sex, drugs, and alcohol.
Yes, time out may be childish, but girl, you need discipline.
Your friends are all moronic whores who are keeping you down in this world.
At least, all but one. Thank God for her.
She very well may have saved you from… Whatever.
Whatever.
You’ll learn, you’re a smart girl.
You should be in honors.
You shouldn’t worry about living up to the precedents that I have set.
I can’t live up to yours.
We are both spectacular people in very different ways.
Test scores mean what? A dinner… Some money maybe….
You can get that from all of the things you do as well.
They’re proud of you.
I’m proud of you.
He may punish you, but you really do need it.
He still loves you.
He carries a picture of you in his wallet
Everywhere he goes.

I tell you, the times my father and I clashed while I was growing up.....we were very similar. This poem really brings back memories.
An amazing poem with a beautiful ending. |
