September Never Came

Contributed by jaeann on Thursday, 28th August 2003 @ 11:45:00 PM in AEST
Topic: Grief

One last day to rest upon the porch,
hang laundry on the line,
spray the flying ants,
fix the broken sign.

One last day to sweep off the front porch,
teepee the neighbor's lawn,
drive circles through downtown,
hot cocoa, late night talks and yawns.

One last holiday to decorate the front porch,
wear flannel night gowns in winter,
watch an old sappy movie,
back up the years....hail the vinter.

One last family picture on the front porch,
one last kitty perch,
one last wave good-bye,
one last longing search.

One last sit in the rocking chair on that front porch,
long rides home on Sunday nights,
hometown memories slipped away,
ever since you've left Mama.... nothing's felt right.

it is as beautiful as it is sad, you place the reader on her porch, give glimpses of your life, your grief. i'm sorry for your loss.

Very moving. You capture that sense of 'longing and missing' nicely. It's beautifully tragic. Nice poem.
