a little girl

a little girl with large dark eyes
in a faded red skirt with yellow flowers,
pulls at the scarf that covers her hair, and
rushes her step to keep pace with her mother.
oh say can you see, the tanks rolling by,
dark bumps on the line between earth and the sky,
backlit by fiery haze veiling stars
resemble roaches scurrying from light.
please don’t leave me mamma, please don’t let go
my hand, don’t loose me, I don’t understand
what we did wrong, why do they hurt us,
why to call us evil mamma, am i bad.
and the rockets’ red glare smell of blood in the air
point your dagger at the heart of the regime
the general said, like a coach before a game
come join my prayer boys, for we kill in god’s name.
while a little girl with large dark eyes
huddles in a makeshift tent, feels the ground shake
reaches for her mother’s warmth, and gentle touch.
please hold me mamma, tight, keep me safe this night.
then conquer we must, holy ground, sacred oil
once loosed, there's no hiding from a heat seeker
prayers for the mosque, find your shelter elsewhere, but
ever watchful of occasional misfire.
and a little girl with large dark eyes
wakes to the blast of a bomb and screams, searing
metal shard in her leg, her mother lay dead, the tent topples, a shroud now, for mother and child.
the bombs bursting in air, shatter windows
and lives, dismember bodies, stain the ground red, hush the screams, and leave babies dead, oops, misfire,
too bad for collateral damage, but the cause makes it fair.
and a little girl with large dark eyes
lays crying, bleeding, under a toppled tent
please don’t leave me mamma, who will hold me near
and in dawn’s early light, feels her mother grow cold.
