Do you want to hear a story
A story that brings tears to my eyes
A story of a little girl
Trapped in a world of hate and lies
The story begins on a nice sunny day
In a hospital on the fourth floor
A brand new baby girl is born
Not knowing the life that lies before her.
The child grew up in a world of punishment and hate
She never knew the love of a family
Never knew what it was like to have a friend
Never knew what it was like to be happy.
Every morning she woke extra early
So she could walk the miles to school
Sometimes she awoke on a mattress on the floor
Or sometimes on the street, wrapped in a sweater of wool.
See her parents, on many occasions
Just kicked her out of the house
So she had to sleep where ever she could
But at least away from the fighting and shouts.
She arrived at school to laughs and pointing
Carrying her brother’s old school bag
Wearing the old clothes her sister used to wear
Hearing the jeers, closing her eyes so sad.
Her teachers yelled at her all through the class time
Her homework wasn’t done again
She didn’t have all her books she needed
Could they get nothing through her thick head?
She tried to explain, her stuff was in her house
She couldn’t get it before she was kicked out
But they would never listen to her pleas
Sometimes they got the paddle out
She misbehaved in class sometimes
Or at least that’s what they said
She sometimes drifted away
Didn’t pay attention to what the teacher had to say
Trying to find peace within herself instead.
Then the bell for lunch would ring,
She’d walk to the lunchroom alone
Sit at the end of an empty table
Watching friends laugh and talk,
wishing for the kindness she was never shown
Then came time for recess
She walked outside, alone once again
People laughed at her as she walked by
She watched them play, and hang out with their friends
Her clothes are dirty, and her hair unwashed
People point and laugh at her
“She has no good family,” they say, “she’s nasty”
“Who’d want to be friends with her?”
“She glares at people when they pass”
“She doesn’t ever talk to anyone”
“She has cuts all over her arms, I’ve seen them”
Sometimes she wished she just had a gun.
So one day she would lose control
Someone would break her last nerve, and then
All of the sudden it’s back to the office
She knows she screwed up again.
The bell finally rings for school to end
She really doesn’t want to go
For as much crap as she gets at this place
She still considers it better than home
So she walks the miles to her house
Where she enters into the storm
Where it rains and hails fists and insults
Where everyone wishes she hadn’t been born
As this girl grows into a woman
The pain of the past grows with her
She becomes friends with a knife’s cold kiss
Her heart becomes as cold as December
Through her blur of memories
Of rape, laughs, beatings and death
She gets lost in the tears she cry inside
All the time stuck inside her own head.
And so she lives on, everyday the same
Until one day she won’t be able to deal
And her dream of death that comes now and then
It may finally become real.
And then with the many pills she takes
Or maybe when she cuts her wrists
She’ll be free from her prison she’s made
She’ll be free from all of this.
This story isn’t finished yet
Who knows where it will end
It brings tears to my eyes
Pay attention to what I’ve said
For I know the girl I’m talking about
You too may know the girl in the story
She’s a girl I meet with every day
This is the little girl inside of me.
