One Stone
“She had lain there before, among the pebbles
Fallen, from the hands of those
Who were weary of her weight”
But my hands are unique
And do not easily relinquish
Those things to which they take hold
In the palm of my hand I now carry a stone
Sharp enough to cut through a callous
Too soft to reach the bone
In the palm of my hand I carry a stone
Sharp as North on a compass star
Too true to lead me anywhere but home
In the palm of my hand I carry a stone
in the tightest grasp and know
the faults are in my hand, not what I hold
I have lain there before, naken as I tremble
Fallen, from the hand of one
Who was never weary of the weight
In the palm of my lord I will stand alone
And he will judge the weight of my soul
And in his forgiveness proclaim – one stone

I love the feeling in this poem. It's sympathetic, even empathetic, but still offers a real answer to challenge of the first stanza. Without the pathos, perhaps the answer would ring hollow; without the answer, I suppose the pathos would be a bog. I also appreciate the poet's keen vision to offer us an insight from the world of human love to the world of divine love, from the the penultimate to the ultimate. |

I'm not sure I have really grasped this very deep and strong poem but I think that I am perhaps half way there.
I've just written a poem "I haven't got a soul" Should you read it you will see that I am far from sure about God and, though a little flippanntly, why I am questioning myself.
