They say that seeing is believing and I believed in you
I heard your words and I knew you were right
I saw you smile and I felt free
Everytime I felt your heartbeat thumping in your chest
I felt like my life was still going
With your arms around me I was safe and warm.
And then you started to ripple in the mirror...
Your words hurt me more than loved me
Your heart grew so small and distant that I had trouble finding it
Your warmth went away and my life reflected your disappearing face.
At times I thought it was my fault
How could someone so beautiful and mysterious become so cold and abrupt unless I screwed up?
No longer did I hear you because you stopped talking
You stopped holding me and you went away
You withdrew from my life and went on with your own, leaving me to fend for myself
And I used to wonder--and still do--did you ever really care and if you did, what happened?
But now, I understand, it wasn't my fault.
I was more open than you
As generously as I gave, you selfishly took until I had nothing new to give and then you disappeared.
Now I think of the past when I least expect it and I'm confronted by my memories.
I laugh with everyone about them but really I hurt each time your face catches the light in the mirror.
I don't think I'll ever stop feeling that hurt, but there's always the possibility.
They say that actions speak louder than words, and I finally heard you.
