The Canary Song

Down in the darkness
In the damp pits of Hell
A tiny canary
Sings a morbid death knell
She chirps a light tune
As hunched men chip away
At the oily black coal
For a months worth of pay
Four sets of eyes widen
As she catches her breath
Each man wonders
If this signals their death
She continues her song
So merry and gay
They heave a collective sigh
They won't die today
She croons to her companions
In these bottomless pits
They'll nurture and protect her
For it's their death if she quits
So this tiny canary
And four men of the earth
Continue their life's work
For what it's worth.
