A Message to the Cutters

Contributed by karoody on Thursday, 10th July 2003 @ 01:35:00 PM in AEST
Topic: EmotionalPoetry

I saw the cuts on your wrists
The pills missing from the cabinet
Lie all you want
But we both know how feel about life
But I ask you friend to stop and ponder this thought...
What if you became suddenly ill
And your days were numbered
Which side of the coin do you see?
Is it sweet release
or are you angry now because your choice is gone?
Think about it...
Your life is a blessing
Look around
So many beg for one more day while you throw yours away...
Selfish you...cut your wrists, destroying the hearts of those who love you...

It's obvious to me that you put a lot of emotion into this poem. Your message has gotten through to me. Great contribution.

I understand where you are coming from with this write...My sister cut herself to relieve her pain for several years. I had no idea how to stop her...I began to cut myself cause it was better and safer to hurt myself instead of someone else...God gived different battles to different people. but don't look down on cutters and consider them selfish they just have not yet found a way to deal with the things that bother them. `daydreamer`

I do understand where you are coming from, but i am not sure you understand us....

Yes, i know that i'm selfish, but dont think for a second that if it was possible i wouldnt give my life to someone who actually wants it.

Great job on this poem, you wrote it with your heart. But now I need you to understand that some cutters cannot find another way around their problems. I was one of them, and it wasn't until another person physically took me out of the house situation that I was in that I stopped. Even though I knew I was being selfish all the time.

I cut for a long time, but never once did I ever do it with the intention of killing myself. I've never really wanted my life to end, and when I did, once upon a time, I knew I couldn't do that to the one person that I knew it would really kill. I know a lot of people who cut, or who have cut, who never wanted to die. It's not always about that. In fact, more often that not, it isn't.

I am not even a cutter and this write makes me angry. Ok, I tried cutting once or twice so call me a cutter if you like... but I couldn't continue it anymore because the emotional pain I was feeling at the time was already overbearing and I didn't want the physical pain as well. For some though cutting may seem like the only option to make them feel better because maybe they just don't know how to deal with what they are feeling. I can tell you this...people who do cut are NOT selfish, by saying that they are selfish you are only going to make it worse for most people and it's not going to help if you make them look like the bad guy.

This is written very well & it was nice of you to write this, as an attempt to reach out to people who cut.... I remember how appalled I was to see my, at the time, best friend with a bright red cut on her arm for the first time. It's a horrible thing to do to yourself, and I hope people can learn to find another way to relieve their problems.

Your "Mission" Karoody, is not in vain..
let me assure you of that with confidence.
I can say I am witnessing the proof right here.
Since you posted this poem only a little while ago
you have already touched so many who had to hear
what you had to say on such a delicate, touchy subject.
You do not have to be at the other end of a suicide hotline
to be there for others who need honesty.
By being who you are you show what is what
without being pretentious,
something that very few are capable of.
You have come through splendidly,
blessings and all the power to you and your mission.

This is a very honest write on a touchy subject. I have never cut and to be honest I dont know anyone who has either. Iv never even heard of it until i came to this site. I admit I dont understand it at all but think it can be an addiction like other things, drugs, alcohol etc. It makes me sad to read that there are so many that do this.Im not begrudging anyone here for it either. I just hope that this poem reaches out to comfort and help those who do. Everyone on this site is a beautiful person and I consider you all a friend.I would be very sad if you are hurting.

I'm confused as to why anyone would cut themselves. It seems so stupid to think that slicing your body would do any good to solve any problems you may be experiencing, but hey it's their life, andthey should be allowed to do with it what they want. And with so many great drugs in this world. If someone doesn't like their life, they should just get high or kill themselves properly. I don't feel the need to try to save anyone, either. If you want to end your life that's not selfish, it's moronic, but defintly not selfish. Sure other people out there who might have terminal illnesses and wishing they had the health of some depressed individual who contemplates suicide, or just cutting themselves, but they can not trade bodies, they can not trade health. But to say that they are doing the world injustice by actually going through with something like self mutilation is the real injustice. Maybe it's none of your business. Maybe it's you that makes them want to do those things. So I guess you should stop preaching and just find more normal friends.

There are truths to all that is written here. Both in poem and comments but do not fear for ...your message will stay with them as that is exactly why they are so down and feeling there is no way out..Its either they are in a situation and cant get out or they have taken everything negative anyone has ever said to them/about them and cannot throw it away. They keep the words...always in the back of the mind instead of saying...nah i dont need this *****.Im better than this.As for being in a bad place..if they really want out..they have the choice..there are plenty of places to go.Some nice some not so nice...but it cant be as bad as being somewhere with people or things that have you cut yourself.I sympathise with them..i really do...but there are some people in this world worse off than them...I have to wonder the ages of these cutters as I have found through growing that I am not the only one in this world with problems.I say stop whining and get help..its there..somewhere..if you're so desperate..go and find it.I sound so cold but I have been through a life of absolute crap...and im still standing...Rape,abuse of every kind,on the end of someones drugs, alcohol problems,How bt these people take a walk through the childrens ward at a hospital...a terminally ill child wanting nothing more than to live..hmmm.....

You have written a beautiful poem with a great message. For those of us who don't cut it is hard to understand. For those who do maybe they can find the strength to relieve their pain another way. Life is precious it is a gift. Our bodies are part of that gift. Thank you for the great write.

In my short life, I have been suicidal. I have never cut, but I have hurt ymself in other ways. I am confused as to how hurting your self is selfish. I know from experience that it is the only way to get rid of the pain you already feel. Try being raped, having your best friend turn on you, all your friends take the rapists side, your boyfriend takes his side, your family only cares for 5 minutes, yes the only way to make yourself feel better and to destroy the pain of being raped is to hurt yourself. Noone else cares, they all believe the one that made you this way in the first place. This is a very touchy subject and a great write, I am not saying for one minute that it is not, and I loved this poem up until you told us we were selfish.

i...hmmm. i read this poem yesterday and wanted to leave a comment, but didn't know what to write. cutting, in my opinion, is not selfish, and i can see why you think it is, but it isn't. how can it be selfish? you cut to relieve the pressure, not to hurt anybody other than yourself. only a few people even know i cut, so how can it be selfish? i'm sorry if i sound rude, but i don't think that unless you have been there you can fully understand how it is...because it really isn't like that...

warm welcome home kara, im so happy to see you posting:) i know you wrote this poem from the bottom of your heart, with much love, from your honest viewpoint, and with much caring for others, however i do not believe cutters to be selfish, only acting upon feelings, in the way known best, i believe many hugs, love and support for anyone in need is best, not to judge them, i am not perfect myself, and have learned many lessons in this life, yes, life is a precious gift, hugs, big love to you and our dear friends everywhere, nessa xx

kara you are the light bearer... you bring light to subject matters that are serious yet not taken seriously sometimes... from readin this i do see a lot of emotion put into it... it seems hard to write something like this without emotion... i don't know what to say bout cutters... i myself am not one... i am either not strong enough or too strong to do something to my body... life as you said is a gift... something that should not be taken lightly... i do feel times where my life is very hard and trying and just seems like i want to end the story there and then... but some will inside of me wants to accomplish too much... its always a corner that needs to be explored... some closet to be peered into... i tell all the cutters... think bout those corners ... try those closets... because something mite be hidin there or just waiting that will make livin all worth the while...
_Sid
p.s. im startin to see my thought in comments ... im very pleased
