Barrio Store

Barrio Store
R. Dafremen

Alicia bends down
sweeps the dust off the floor
wipes the dust from the shelves
off the bell on the door
'cause she's got high hopes
riding on a dream
in a little store
in the barrio

And she waits there
'cause she can see it
like it was yesterday
and the things she'll say
to the regulars
when she gets some
right now she ain't got none
just high hopes
riding on a dream
and a little store
in the barrio
what more do you need?

It's a small store
on a big street
tucked between a pawn shop
and a burrito stop
where the locals meet
Talking 'bout their high hopes
Talking 'bout their big dreams
Talking 'bout a little store
in their barrio
that's got nothing
that nobody needs

Just a friendly lady
with a friendly smile
they smile right back
and walk on by
'cause they don't have a dime
or half of the time
that it takes
to make a dream come true
to take a handful of something
and spend it on nothing's
not the sort of something
that the locals do

So Alicia waits there
like she did just yesterday
and the things they say
never bother her
'cause she knows
she's gonna make it some day
'cause she's got high hopes
riding on a dream
in a little store
in the barrio
what more do you need?

Sigh....and Singapore city used to be a lot like this...still, times do pass by very quickly. I never thought about how progress has altered us so fast until I sat down to read this. Excellent write.
