Your heart cannot soar,
Ohhhh…when it’s been broken.
When what you wish to hear,
Seems to go forever unspoken.
And then you come to the decision,
To make your heart hard.
Your emotions you wish to protect,
And your tender feelings to guard.
Maybe you use words or wood,
You might even use steel.
Understand that if you protect it too much,
That you may cease to feel.
So you try self-examination,
Convinced you will find.
Contentment and happiness within yourself,
If another man never enters your mind.
This does not work either,
So…you consider sleeping around.
This thought quickly leaves your mind,
Without making a sound.
Frustration begins to settle in,
You try hard to figure it out.
Ultimately you just make yourself crazy,
And you sit down to pout.
Then you slowly start to realize,
It’s right at the end of your nose.
Trying to find a man these days,
Well…is like shopping for clothes.
Sometimes you can just tell,
By a quick glance of your eyes.
That an outfit is not quite right for you,
No need to try it on for size.
Other times an outfit can look really good,
When it is hanging on the rack.
And you quickly try it on…
And you quickly put it back.
Then finally you find one,
You’re ready to put it on your charge.
You take one more glimpse in the mirror and,
Realize it makes your butt look really large.
Then, your friend tells you,
I know this outfit, and girl, it looks great.
So you agree to check it out,
And have a really boring date.
Ultimately, you have to realize,
And while it seems a little cruel.
Amid the thousands, there may not be a fit,
You continue to search, feeling like a fool.
Finally, you are ready to give up the search,
And prepared to slam that door.
The perfect outfit may spot you,
As you are walking through the store.
It may jump off the rack at you,
And you’ll doubt that it will fit.
You will find all kinds of excuses,
That don’t matter one little bit.
Finally, you’ll give in and try it on,
Not the right color, not the right style.
Wrong length, and God, it has pleats.
You fear it will end up, in the same old pile.
You slip on the blouse; and it feels so soft,
The skirt fits naturally around your waist.
The jacket feels so good on your shoulders
Maybe you judged in haste?
This outfit is not like all the others,
You look in the mirror and pause.
And wonder out loud to yourself,
Does this outfit have any flaws?
So, finally, after all of the searching,
And dealing with all of your fears.
When you weren’t really looking,
You found an outfit that will last for years.
Then, your heart will be ready to soar,
Broken no longer; ready to fly.
And you’ll never again have to worry,
Or spend time asking “Why?”
This new outfit will feel so good,
Your inner-most fires will stay lit.
This outfit will never wish to be on the rack,
The outfit will know, you are its best fit.

Hi Nessa,
I am really happy that you enjoyed this poem. The guy that left this friend of mine told her he was leaving her "...so he could be closer to God", and as it turns our...apparently God lives in his ex-wife's body! My friend was upset and I just started thinking about her and the poem came out.
For the record, I am happily married with two great kids, so I am not waiting patiently on her. However, she does always seem to tell me that all of the really good guys are married....or gay.
Take care Nessa, I will be watching for more of your work.
Thanks again for taking the time to write.

Hi Shari,
As always, thanks very much for taking a few moments to read and comment on the poem. My friend's last boyfriend left her so he could, "...be closer to God." As it turns out, apparently "God" lives in the body of his ex-wife! Anyway, she told me the whole story one morning and I wrote "Clothes Shopping" later that evening and sent it to her the next day.
Thanks again for leaving a comment.
