Relief

I send out my mind,
Give it a face to find,
One of laughter and care,
I call to him there.

He picks up my call,
And answers with a drawl,
"What is it you wish?"
His voice is elvish.

He pops into view
Exactly as I remember, I knew.
He looks exactly the same,
Those 25 years have done him no shame.

He looks at me now with a smile,
"These last years have been a trial,
You have been here, changing,
While I have been out ranging."

I look down at myself,
Then to the portrait of us on the shelf,
I have changed alot,
While he has changed not.

He waits for my answer patiently,
It's an elvish thing, you see,
Time means nothing to him,
The chances of him dying are slim.

I remember our trip,
Where we first found our friendship,
When the adventure came to an end,
He said "you may always call me your friend."

As he looks at me now,
Worry comes to his brow,
His smile slips to a frown,
As he looks me up and down.

"You do not look well,
You look as fragile as a shell,
If I can heal you I'll try."
I look him in the eyes and cry.

"I will not live much longer."
I say, as his disgust grows stronger.
"Why did you not call me?
My healing could of set you free!"

"I knew that it was my time."
His eyes, they accuse me of crime,
"I will be with you to the end,
I wish to say good-bye to my friend."

He took me into his arms,
Used all his elvish charms,
In the end it was all he could do,
I softly whispered, "I love you."

The end was then upon me,
Then he said, "My love you will always be."
As I died, my smiled showed relief,
While his eyes held only grief.

That was really beautiful. I find myself crying. Tears drip down my face, and I realize the saving grace of having a true friend. But in the end, that was just really touching.
