White Man's Guilt

Contributed by Terry_Stephen_Driscoll on Friday, 9th August 2002 @ 06:31:41 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

I’m returning all the blessings God that on me were bestowed,
And ask that they be shared among the people that are owed.
Confiscate the love you gave me; spread it equally,
Among deserving victims of white supremacy

Eradicate my dignity, my hope and all my dreams,
Then deafen me with agonies of ethnic children’s screams.
Blind me with the brightest light that fuels a Negro’s smile
Then fill my eyes with torture and atrocities most vile.

The slaves that once were chieftains, plague me with their fears,
Drown me in a billabong brimmed with ancient tears.
Weigh my limbs with cuffs and chains that labour on my skin
And place upon my narrow back the burden of our sin.

Appropriate the freedom rights of those indigenous
To lands of tribal histories that don’t belong to us.
Gather the oppression of lands and continents
And where the white man made his claim, destroy the evidence.

Forgive the retributions of those who fought with nail
For the lives of all the people whose freedom must prevail
And after this is done oh God myself I offer whole,
But if these deeds prove not enough then turn away my soul.

I 'enjoyed' this poem a great deal. The injustices meted out by a so called 'superior race' need to be aired as often as possible. All too often these injustices were swept under the carpet, or attempts made to rewrite history in a vain attempt to justify white man's actions. An attitude of "guilt? What guilt!" all too often coming to the fore.

Brilliantly written, thank you for reposting this, as I was never aquainted with the original site.

As ever, in awe......

Holly

Hi Terry,
Read you poem with much interest. We in America have paid heavily for the slavery we imposed upon the African-Americans in the nineteenth century. Hundreds of thousand of Northern Americans gave their lives that that evil might be abolished. I think our debt to the African-Americans has been paid in full.

Always,
Laurie

No doubt this is an ingenius poem true work of great art but for all of you who are turning it into an ethnic issue dont plz enjoy the art for the way it makes you feel and the beauty of its construction. No one should feel guilty for the mistakes of others or their ancestors to do otherwise is foolish and self destructive you can only make sure you do not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Hey
Look a here.....

This poem is really deep and like someone said, "it isn't a topic much discussed." I have much appreciation for this work, probably because my people are Native American and Black. BUT wow, ummm, that is a heavy burden my friend. I mean WOA that is some serious stuff to "spell out", "look at", and then CHOOSE to carry. MUCH POWER to u my friend.

England didn't have slavery in fact the Royal Navy did much to eliminate the slave trade.
But before that England grew rich on "The Triangular Trade." Trinkets to Africa- Slaves to America-Cotton to Liverpool .
We lived "Across the water" from Liverpool (Wallasey) and I rremember the first time I ever saw "A Black Man" ( there were very few to be seen in the twenties) but my father took us down the docks and showed us the iron rings in the wall where the slaves were chained when the ships had to re-route. They were not supposed to bring slaves to England but could keep them on the dockside for short periods.
I've never forgotten that and your poem brings it back vividly. It wasn't so very long ago.

Indeed, but let me get this straight: NO FORMER IMPERIALIST POWER is innocent of the troubles wreaked upon their former colonies-there's more than just slavery...War. Racial violence. Pillagings. Religious intolerance. Poverty. Even today, these problems are ever present, repercussions of the deeds of a once callous and arrogant group of people. Blacks aren't the only ones affected, we "coloureds" have also been treated with contempt time and again.

its a good poem, but i think this black-pity-martyr thing is getting out of hand, how long must whites suffer the mistakes of their ancestors from centuries past, my people never even had slaves yet black people have verbally attacked, there were white slaves too, slaves of all races, blacks should not thinnk that they were the only ones, let it go

i'd like to take a moment just to say that i feel the white man has paid his debt to society for his everlasting sins as a whole; how can you hold an entire race forever responsible for events that occurred so long ago, and by different people with their own ignorance. they too had minds to decide for themselves what was right and what was wrong, why must those of today be held accountable?

now as for the poem, very deep and very well formed... if it weren't for the overall message, i'd've rated it a 5...

All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling.-Oscar Wilde

i hate to say it, because it's not P.C. but the world is a harsh place and it is survival of the fittest. i think slavery was horrible but i don't think a people have to have guilt over being a strong people.

Being an old white man
I feel not the guilt
Rather ___ I feel the shame
of being associated with ignorance
Fearing the failure to understand
would continue in degradation
Till we would suffocate in our own hatred

This white man has no problems with this,we were kicked out of Ireland by people who didn't like our religion.I am not guilty of any oppression but have tried to help the original people of Australia to be called racist names.
My best friend is a Pacific Isalnder, his people were brought to Australia as slaves,oh,we didn't call them that. They were workers on the sugar cane as this work was 'not for white men'.We called it 'Black Birding'.Holding people against their will and transported here to work for little or nothing at all.

This poem was a heart-felt expression of guilt and pain......truly moving. I would hope that all races will keep it in mind that this can happen to anyone, on both sides. History is what shapes who were are, yet we cannot stay in past or we will never evolve into what we could truly be. I hope this poem is widely read and taken in the spirit with which it was written. You cannot pay penance for every misdeed of history, but you can learn, grown, and change what will be for tomorrow.

This must be spoken from the mind of one very close to Jesus. It might have been His very words from the Cross, on that Day. It is definately from a grieving soul, a heavy heart. 'No greater love can man give than to lay down his life for his friend.'

Wonderful poem. The white supremecy. What a lie in itself. The Afro American was in the beginning members both male and female of many African Tribes with their own form of civilization that existed long before the whites came into the picture. I take my hat off to you for this most brilliant write.

by the way I am a so called white man.

I am not familiar with the original, but I enjoyed the piece. Although my views are a bit off-base, it is true that the slaves of yesteryear suffered immensely. The movies that tell us a little of the day, but will never know unless we lived in that time what it was really like. I know none of it was good ~ not at all. Suppression is running rampart as we speak. Not only from the White Man as you stated, but every country in the world. Though I did not condon the actions of those lost souls, we are in 2005 and it still occurs, now that is the greatest sin of all. To not have come forward, but taking a step backward, the Black Man must stop his violence towards his own. I speak of the youth who can change their fate. Don't be a victim ~ be the Power that you were given. Knowledge is a terrible thing to waste when you are given it for the asking. In all, it made me think. A deep piece and thank you for sharing it with us.

Just a thought- By feeling guilty on behalf of the white man you are maintaining the distinction between colour which made slavery possible in the first place. Why would you feel guilty for the evil of any human being, even those whose colours is as yours..

I really felt this poem... I may be just a 15 year old white girl but I believe that the black community is owed more than just 40 acres and a mule (per Special Field Order #15 by General Sherman). It's despicable what "white men" subjected fellow human beings to and I for one think that that debt may never be repaid. All I have to do is look at the black people of my country compared to the whites to see that things haven't come that far and slavery wasn't so long ago...

First of all, beautiful poem. It's one of the best I've ever read. Although I'm a white redneck from the south who stronly believes in southern culture, I in no way believe what happened in the past was right. Horrific events took place that no one should have ever witnessed or experienced. But if we keep holding on to the events that divided our nation, won't they still divide us? I feel that it's time to let go of all the friction between races and start loving each other.

A beautiful piece. If only guilt were on the shoulders of them that commited such hideous crimes, and not the children of thier children's children. I truly cannot understand how slavery could have been. I know it was, but how can a people have no heart? Could they not feel the tears from the slave's hearts? The deepest parts of hell must be reserved for people such as those, for surely they could have no soul.
Your poem was greatly moving. I doubt not that your soul will not be turned away, for greta love resides in it.
Take care.
David

I enjoyed your poem very much, however I do disagree a little. I respect your opinion very much, but the African Americans were not the only ethnic group to have suffered. My Irish ancestors were mistreated, abused, and were not even able to find decent jobs when they came here to America. Also, I believe that today in Amercia, we have many things to protect African Americans (and many other minorites...) from racial inequality. Take for example the Affirmative Action plan. I know someone (who was white..) who was recently turned away from a job, (even though he was very qualified..) because an African American had applied for that same job. I do agree African Americans have suffered greatly, but then again, we're all a mix of many cultures. Whose ancestors haven't suffered?
All the same, if that's the way you feel, I totally respect that. And your poem was beautiful and told the truths about what the African Americans did go through sometime ago.

Is my brother an only wither in a world of pure realm
And my sister only just a place in vein
Shall we just speak word of pure break
Yet together the races only ever mean't to embrace
Yeah our pasts and endless race
But who realy stand's to recognise
The fact we here to split all that is same
And many only ever draw the line
Yet many walk away from the skin of pure begin

okay for starters i am a mixed child who has grow up in the world of today it . sucks that people have to go and mess things up by writing thing like you did. i mean don't get me wrong i am for the whole free speech thing but this has crossed the line some. i know not all white people are to blame for what happen to the slaves. but when a person calls out a whole race thats just wrong. we don't want the 40acres and a mull. we just want to be treated like people like everyone else. but thats all i have to say

A racist poem to denounce racism? As ignorant as the concept of holocaust survivor supporting genocide in Kosovo.
