I knew his heart
the pitter-pattering feet
to the door
a race to get the mail;
his was a yearning
to belong to that man
who had left him
standing
looking just like his mother
who stood checking her mail.
But the little boy’s dark brown eyes
caught mine
as if to ask me to stay.
Daddy?
No, it’s just the mail
she answered in a blush
because she knew
the little boy
looked just like me.
