A SECRET PLACE

A SECRET PLACE

I finished school I left the street,
A secret mission a mate to meet.
The sky auburn I was nearly late,
I said hello as I reached the gate.
We walked across fields for miles,
Past chattering birds and muddied styles.
The sun came out to halt the gathering storm,
Her rays cast out to keep us warm.
As faces flushed with the heat,
We munch away on boiled sweets.
Soon I spy our secret treasure,
I stare, and stare with happy pleasure.
Abandoned house with creepers that spread.
Old machine tools by garden shed.
Scampering over to explore at last,
Squinted eyes from the suns hot blast.
Shadows danced beams were glancing,
Entering we did where we were able,
To stand and stare at broken table.
Cans and bottles stained red rusted,
Bits of food long ago crusted.
A mouse looks up rather curious,
Whiskers moved fast and furious.
Another appeared maybe a pair?
He sat and scratched grey matted hair.
A vase lay broken once filled with bloom,
Nothing else filled the room.
Moving out towards the shed,
We enter quietly on muted tread.
Old machines and wet grass,
Block inside hindering our pass.
Though we had walked for miles,
We looked at each other with beaming smiles.
For this was our camp from a dream,
Hidden away by a slumberous stream.
We should be home you know for three,
I checked my watch agreed for tea.
Leaving behind our secret finds,
We chatter away with happy minds.
Sparkling eyes watch from the mouse,
Whiskers fast and furious inside the house.
