Born tame, gone wild

She speaks of dragons, wastelands.
Water falling softly, unguided and carving
a path of its own--
I have met an animal born tame,
Gone wild to flee abuse, or neglect,
or both. Is there a difference?
"This I have learned," she weeps.
"Instincts are to be trusted. Always--
Even at cost of great pain. They protect."
The wilderness is cold at night, and lonely.
Can this wild child ever trust the presence of walls?
Even the kindest hand bears some resemblance
to the cruelest.
This wildness, she knows it is beautiful.
It is fierce and strong, and she loves it.
But it is not a tender lover. She ages.
