Abortion (American Dream)

Contributed by bobotheclown on Wednesday, 18th June 2003 @ 08:05:00 AM in AEST
Topic: AmericanTragedy

Break her uterus
Pop her womb
Oh yes, these practices are safe
Stick in your claws
Remove that 'problem'
Piece by piece
The baby that could have the cure,
The cure for cancer or AIDS
This is your right to kill a HUMAN

So you walk out
Feeling violated, guilty, unclean
Tears streaming down, like glass
Seeing the protesters being beaten
Oh yes, this is the country
That promotes 'freedom of speech'
The right to 'voice your opinion'
But satan has reared his ugly head
And set up these bastions of evil
In this 'godly nation'

The lines of young women
Money clenched in their anorexic, arthritic hands
The payment to kill a life
Because your country is 'advanced'
You can get rid of your 'problem'
And continue being immoral
Maybe you should keep your pants on
Or use something called protection

Walk into satan's mouth
Let it steal a part of you
This is your right your privilege,
But your only a pawn
Spat out of the factory
Oh yes, don't you feel fresh and new?
Isn't this the 'American dream'?
No its sick, wrong, and morally degrading
Satan is laughing and licking his hands
And we're putting up with this
***** 'American dream' my @$$

Joel...once again you have amazed me with your writing. This was an excellent poem on a true tragedy. Not many people could write on a subject such as this but you have done so amazingly. Great write.

Joel,
I liked the poem and in a way I agree. Abortion isn't right. Then again look at it from a 14 year old rape victims side and tell her that she has to have that baby. I sit back and often think about what it would have been like to have become pregnant when I was raped and how I probably would have had an abortion only because I was so young. Your saying in this poem that in that situation its not even right. Thats nine months of pain for something that isn't that persons fault why should they have to go through with it when there is other options. Besides teenagers bodies aren't made for having babies thats why so many young ladies died from it. As far as the protection goes its not always 100% safe that way either. So I think it's a great poem and shows your views as well as many others but it doesn't even address the fact that some people don't become pregnant willingly.

So far you've had all the positive reactions to what you wrote. But the freedom of speech allowed you to voice what you just did. Personally I'd rather see it done in a clinic situation rather than a bathtub with a coathanger. If Roe v. Wade was reversed it's what it would ultimately lead to. If a woman is determined enough to fight through an angry mob of protesters doing God knows what. Well what's to stop her once it becomes illegal from taking matters into her own hands.

Hey, Vanessa you are right that i did not address that topic. Personally I think abortion is only ok if it has been proven the mother could die if she has the baby. Advancements in medical technology have made that a very rare case however.
As far as rape goes in most cases of course the girl is of course innocent. One question u need to ask yourself is it the babies fault? of course a 14 yr.old girl isn't ready to take care of a baby. In my opinion she should give it up for adoption and the rapist should be put in jail for life, but that is a whole 'nother topic. Thnx for yer opinion.

"touchy subject" ??? Total understatement ;)
For me to air my opinion would be very difficult because it really isnt so cut and dry.On one hand there is use protection and have some fun or keep your legs closed else come undone. On the other you have what another reader mentioned and that is impregnation by force and violence. For this last one i have to say that I am grateful for the clinics not like years ago when the bathtub and coathanger were so often used.I myself am against termination to the point where I prefer to not even use the other term for it ;) but it depends on the situation and I honestly..if faced with it ,would not like to be telling my child that he/she came from violence and pain...as all bubbies...life...should be born of love. This was a very brave write and I commend you on your care for the the ones who do not ask to be conceived and sadly do not have a say. ((hugs to you)))

good write. you sounded really pist off in this scrawl and angry people always make me smile. frankly, i don't care either way about abortion. what other people do with or to themselves doesn't matter to me. but it was a very emotional and angry piece and i thought it was bad ass.

Before I wrote this poem I had never heard of the coathanger method. Sounds sorta gruesome to me. I wrote this because over half of the women who get an abortion experience some sort of guilt and depression over killing their children. Thnx to all who commented on my poem regardless of your opinion.

Peace,
Joel

and what about the girls who have been raped
and they're sitting in the waiting room
waiting to get rid of their "problem"
they already feel " violated, guilty, unclean" and "Tears streaming down" their faces before they walk out of the clinic
obviously you have never been raped
obviously you've never felt like the only way for someone to love is for them to do what they like to you even let them have sex with you without protection just so you can hear them say i love you
obvioulsy you've never denied yourself the right to eat just because you've lost control of the voices in your head
and obviously you've never sat in the waiting room with your "Money clenched in their anorexic, arthritic hands
The payment to kill a life"
you have no idea
you are heartless
you probably think you've never done anything wrong in your whole entire life
never committed a sin
gone to confession every day
i mean not that you have anything to confess
because you're just soooooo perfect
you should be ashamed for writing such a poem
for even thinking such a thing

I was raped, and for ages after, was scared to death I was going to get pregnant. But I made a decision there and then, if I was pregnant, I would not abort. It is not the childs fault, the baby is living right from the word go. They didn't choose to be killed, to be concieved of rape. I said from the word go that if I was pregnant, I would have the baby and give it up for adoption. As far as I'm concerned the baby doesn't deserve to die because of someone elses actions. I thought I could at least give the baby a chance to live a normal life with loving parents, and to have the life that was taken away from me. So I don't agree with the above comment, he should not be ashamed for writing this poem, it is an amazing write and it justified my reasons for why I would give the baby up for adoption.

many people have commented on rape victums, when i was raped i was given the morning after pill... its like a really strong dose of birth control.... so that way i really didn't have to worry about abortion... however, think that we should still let people choose... people will do what they want, whether its legal or not.... Joel i love the way you place important messages within your poems. This is a strong subject that can be argued and argued and i think that you have justified it as much as i would if i was asked to comment on it. Totally amazing.

well written poem but...
firstly, this is not 'american tragedy', people deal with abortion all over the world
also: yes, abortion is a much, MUCH better idea than the old, illegal, extremely dangerous methods
as others have said: what if the girl was raped? what if she doesnt want to go through having a baby and then know that the child will be put up for adoption? would you like to grow up knowing that you were given up for adoption cos your dad was a rapist and you were concieved in the midst of brutal violence and terror?
what if a girl has been left by the father and cant face bringing a child into the world who she knows will have a crap life cos shes poor and single and not in a position to be responsible for another human being?
what if both the mother and father know they cant give the baby a good life?
what if, as someone above said, the girl was emotionally and mentally coaxed into having sex unprotected or the protection went wrong, when all she wanted to do was show her boyfriend she loves him?
im not saying some of these situations are good or 'right' ones to get ourselves into, but they happen. we're human. others of them, people have no choice and it happens and its horrendous. why is it fair they should have to deal with the consequences for the rest of their lives, and make the baby's life awful too?
theres many situations in which abortion is THE best answer - surely it should be legal in that respect.
