i am from
land rolled out like a carpet
prairie sun
quiet snow
i come from my father flooding the rink
in the back yard so that
my sister, brother and i can
skate.
i come from
consistency
predictability
snowforts
and hockey practise.
i am from left field
and baseball teams that never won
but always went for ice cream
because my dad
was the coach.
a pharmacy
that we would visit on sundays
when it was closed
and we always got to pick out a
treat
tiger beat magazine
bubble bath
and later
some medication
to get through a rough time.
but i'm okay now.
i am from a&w drive-ins
and the bamboo palace
long hot drives through british columbia
where an inner tube and a blue lake would
crystallize memories
of my father's smile.
i come from
a station wagon world
parakeets and kittens, puppies and an iguana i wasn't allowed to keep.
trophies from golf tournaments
and white wedding dresses at christmas
scotch and the clackety clack of the typewriter,
an upright piano and a garden full of peas.
the steady rhythm of his swimming
every morning and his breathing
every night.
lunches of gin splashed tomato soup
across the street from the pharmacy
and my dad's laughter with the dentist
which rings out like bells.
i am the witness to a marriage
that has lasted decades
through better or worse
sickness and health
and from a father who has unwittingly
raised the bar so high
that likely no one will be able to rise to it
without a trampoline.
i come from shrieking children being chased
by their dad, hair dishevelled, from a kitchen where punching the newspaper while he reads it still makes us laugh and him grit his teeth.
i come from tornados and black skies,
thunderstorms that crackle with electricity
a river that runs through a city
slowly
folk festivals, pink sunsets and
mosquito repellent
simon and garfunkel concerts
a house full of teenagers
and barbequed hamburgers in the back yard.
i come from love.

I know where you are coming from
simply because you've seen to it
such that your words come through as a poem
about dad and so much more through him
about things precious because they are real
about being a Canadian, about being human. |
