Spirits

He woke up that morning with a headache and feeling a little sick
He couldn't understand why he was in bed alone
But when he had too much to drink the night before, nothing seemed to click

He sat up and tried to clear his head until he could think
She was probably still asleep on the couch,
Where she could escape the stench of the drink

He went to apologize like he had a hundred times before
But nothing could prepare him for this
He remembered nothing; nothing of the scene portrayed on the floor

In the middle of the kitchen, she appeared almost asleep
Her clothes were torn and crimson
And he stood shocked and silent, staring at the bloody heap

A thousand thoughts ran through his muddled head
A hundred bruises covered her body
And he could not bring himself to believe she was dead

One of his knives was stabbed to the hilt into her chest
It was like a bloody cross mocking him
Telling him how she was caught in this eternal rest

He kneeled beside her running his hand over her skin
And when he it went over the bruise perfectly
He suddenly felt the guilt erode his sole; this was his sin

He noticed the pair of panties by his side
As forcefully removed as the rest
He couldn't believe he did this, how she died

He raped his love, forced himself onto her
And he couldn't remember a damn thing
Not even what she looked like the night before

How many times had she asked him to stop, she was afraid
She though that one night it might get out of hand
Tried to describe the demon that alcohol made

He just shrugged it all off, said he would try
He never really tried to correct it
He never realized what he was like, until she died

He pulled the crimson covered blade from her heart
He would make his amends
And an eternity in hell would be the start.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
