The headlines scream daily
Of the horrors of the Youth
The lows we’ve sunk to
The lives we’ve ruined
All that we’ve wasted
All that we’ve killed.
Look at us now, Mommy.
A girl is found dead in her room
A victim of drugs.
Her escape from reality killed her.
One more was one too many.
A dare turned deadly;
A little pleasure a lethal weapon.
Drugs took her life.
A symbol of today’s youth.
Look at her now, Mommy.
A monotone reporter stands in front of a school
Engulfed in chaos
Brought on by a boy
Wanting to be loved.
Paired with guns and homemade bombs
He avenged the injustice that was piled upon him.
A monster
Sprouted from the lack of love
And inequality,
He took the lives of others
To avenge his own.
Look at him now, Mommy.
A girl walks through her school halls
Not understood
Because she’s lesbian.
Despised by her parents,
A victim of the prejudice of others
For her own feelings;
A fact that she cannot change.
Lonely for someone to reach out,
Someone in those halls
Who will not whisper as she walks by.
Who will not make rude comments
Someone who will try to get to know her for her.
Unable to find one
Because all are afraid.
So she sits alone.
So she walks alone.
So she is alone.
Look at her now, Mommy.
A teenage boy dies,
Killed by a disease
His body could have defeated
Had it not been weakened
By AIDS.
His life cut short
His end full of suffering
Because of a wrong choice.
He died because of AIDS.
His tombstone was erected
Too soon.
His parents mourning the loss of their only son.
Look at him now, Mommy.
A girl lays on her bathroom floor
Cold and lifeless.
Her body is filled with the pills she took
To escape the pains of life.
She bought a one way ticket out.
No one knew.
No one cared enough to ask her
What was wrong.
At the last moment she cried out
And pleaded for someone
Anyone
To let her live.
But it was too late.
Now she’s dead.
Look at her now, Mommy.
A boy is shot
On the city streets
When a gang fight goes out of control.
His parents couldn’t give him the attention he needed.
He found it in a gang.
His loyalty to his “brothers”
Brought him to that dark street.
That fateful night
A bullet tore open his gut
And he lay on the ground
In agony
Until Death was merciful
And took him away.
His “brothers” couldn’t help him.
But it was his love for them
That put him in that bullet’s path.
His future doesn’t exist.
His dreams to leave the city.
His scholarship was voided
By a bullet that ended his life.
A bullet that caused him to collapse
And die on the cold and dirty city street.
Look at him now, Mommy.
The headlines all scream
Of the lows to which our Youth have sunk,
The death we’ve brought on ourselves and others,
Of lives ruined.
This is what we’re becoming.
This is our Legacy.
The Legacy of the Youth of the Twenty-First Century.
Look at us now, Mommy.
