He was a Beautiful,
premature baby,
full of life.
He had blond hair,
like the angel Gabriel,
and Bright blue eyes,
just like the skies.
He had a mother,
he had a father,
just like you and me.
He'd build castles,
in the sand,
and grab his mothers hand,
and say "Look, Mommy Look!"
He went to school,
and learned to count,
and write,
and read,
just like you and me.
But he was different,
from John,
and Wayne,
Adam,
and Luke.
He was short,
not growing taller,
than Five foot Three.
He yearned for more,
than a parents love,
just like you and me.
He studied hard in school,
and went to,
the University of Wyoming.
He had found love,
he had found friends,
just like you and me.
But, still he was different,
from Don,
Dave,
and Dan.
He had a secret,
a terrible secret,
from his family.
He was sick,
and he'd never be well,
he had HIV.
He went to a bar,
sitting all alone,
and they came in.
They were from Laramie,
they were from decent homes,
they offered him a ride.
They smashed his skull,
and took his shoes,
they tied him to a split rail,
and left him there.
Eighteen hours he was there,
broken and bloody,
small and frail.
Two white lines,
ran down his bloodstained face,
lines of tears,
hours of tears, that finally stopped.
He was found like this,
small as a twelve year old child,
a scarecrow of a twenty one year old man,
alone in the darkness.
He stayed in the darkness,
for five days,
trapped in emptiness.
He wasn't sick anymore,
he wasn't alone,
he was in the company,
of friends and family,
he'd once lost,
his spirit was gone,
because of them.
This beautiful presence,
this beautiful man,
was taken away,
because he was gay.
His name,
is one of a bright,
blond haired angel,
named Matthew Shepard.
