When I was younger
Sitting on street corners
Life wasn't simpler
It was that more painful
Cos when I looked round
To an empty stare
All I could think was
I was different
Not better as such
But troubled by dif'rence
And all I could see
Were friendly hollow minds
Cos when I looked around
Empty eyes winked back.
All I could think was
I was different
And years passed forward
Till the paint was faded
And now that I see
My memory teases
Cos when I looked around
Their eyes reflected
Not the lie I sought
I was different

Well I've done the lot and won't pretend it was easy. But then you didn't intend it to be...........
There are some remarkable lines and cleverly captured emotions.
This one reminds me very much of growing up in the thirtees. I thought I was different and proved it by comming from a poor family yet making it as a pilot in the RAF. Of course the war helped. It could never have happened in peacetime.
But I understand completely that feeling and those thoughts when you come back |
