Part One: The Prodigal Son
"Oh, my darling son!
Please don't go away.
It will break my heart if you don't stay.
Honor thy father and mother, too,
a longer life it will give to you.
And we pray for you that God will bless you
all your life through.
Don't turn away from your God up above.
Don't leave your home and the people you love.
There's a world out there
that is fickle and mean!
They'll take all you have with a greed you've not seen.
Though their ways seem more fun than our lives of hard labor,
there'll be a time come when your home you will savor.
Though I beg with my heart for you to stay,...
I will not prevent you from going your way.
God gave the right to each to choose;
I'll not take that from you...
although you will lose."
"Now you are gone and I don't know where.
The time is so long for this grief I bear.
I pray you'll come safely home again.
I look down the road so far away,...
Ohhh, make it soon,
for I'm growing gray.
Your brother's my comfort; I love him dearly.
Attentive and constant, he's precious to me,...
but he is one and you are another!
He can't fill the place in my heart for his brother!
Though you've gone wrong,
I still wait and I long,...
Come again!
Come again!
To this home you belong."
"I see a far traveler coming down the road!
Weary and heart-sick from the weight of his load!
We'll welcome him here,...
give him drink! ...give him meat! ...
and a place to sit down to rest his feet!
Who could he be? From where did he come?
The form looks familiar!
Could it be my son?
The very thought! My heart skips a beat!
I race down the path; will a stranger I meet?
No! 'Tis my son!
'Tis my son that I greet!"
"Oh, I praise Thee, Lord.
Thy mercy is sweet."
"My son! My son!
You've come home at last!
Rest in my arms; forget the past.
Yes. I know you regret
that you caused me sorrow.
Of course, I forgive you;
lets now look to tomorrow.
You wish to be a servant to me?
Ohh, no, my son,
you're forgiven!
You're free!
Put on this ring
and garment of blue!...
A celebration, we'll have for you,...
as, also, the angels in Heaven do!"
Part Two: My Faithful Son
"My dear son,
you have stayed by my side each day,...
through the sweet and the bitter,
you stayed what may.
Through winter's cold and summer's heat,
we worked side by side,
to the challenge meet.
We have wept together
when we felt we were beat,...
and we laughed together o'er a victory sweet.
I may never give you
a ring of gold,...
or the finest garment
that was ever sold.
I may never kill a fatted calf
to call all our friends in your behalf;
but, I've loved you, my son,
each and every day.
I've given you myself
as we went our way.
I will love you always
and likewise, your brother.
Please don't envy the things that I give to the other.
Your brother has not
the things I gave you!
My days with him
have been shortened and few.
Require not your brother,
for his sins to pay.
Resent not my joy at his coming today.
You've been a blessing to me;
be my blessing still.
Be my kindred heart;
that's your father's will.
Not only my sorrows,
but share my joys, too!
Love me; love you brother,
as I have loved you."
