Waiting to Board

We were waiting to board
flashing white teeth
in a group shot
in our conversation
extended far beyond the gangway
waking me to another fantasy
from my existence.
Was all the lugging around
in the hot Florida sun
worth the wait
to find me?
too hot to ignore
starry nights, the dance
holding you close
in my cabin
the stranger of many years?
The flirt is what leads to passion
the power of taking hold of experience,
of turning it round, slowly, in the light1
watching your facets in a slow dance
weighing what was once reality
with how you hold me in facination
in a flash of what was to be
while waiting to board.
1 Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway, pg. 119.
