Words by Don Arracho now gave relief
to Rose for she did hate her mate to ride.
For he could be soon thrown was wife's belief,
and dive was a fear woman couldn't hide.
Huerra smiled across the table to Margarita. She ignored him. Speaking
to her father, she said, " You're one grand vaquero, papa. I wish I
could have been there to see you ride." " A few simple maneuvers,
Margarita, nothing more." Huerra broke into the conversation. " He's
too modest, senorita. I was there and saw him work Bravo. Such
horsemanship! Not even Alvarado could have matched it."
Don Hernandez poured himself another glass of wine in good humor.
" People of Peralta appreciate equitation," he said. Huerra spoke again.
"Very true, Excellency. Are we not descendants of conquistadores,
whether peninsulars, criollos, or mestizos? Humblest mestizos have some
Spanish blood in their veins, Excellency. Today you made that part excited,
proud. I could see in their eyes a willingness to sell their soul for such a
moment in the saddle." Huerra piqued Margarita's interest for the first
time. She listened.

Is this an introduction to a further series of poems? Or a description of relationships whether familial or not. Interesting |
