Solitary Confinement

insomniac

Of all the people you pass every day;
How many chance to look your way?
“Hi there!” “How are you?”, “Fine” the reply;
A nod barely made as we’re hurrying by.
A face you remember; a name you forget;
No need to know them; no cause to regret.
In hallways, or offices, standing in line;
You keep to yours; I’ll keep to mine.
Neighbors who live in our building or street;
Move quietly away before we can meet.
Driving our cars with alarms to remind us;
Home to the garage, the door slams behind us!
Locks on our doors, peepholes decree;
I can see you, but you can’t see me!
Windows to see thru, we cover with curtains;
The sound of our doorbell makes us uncertain!
Licensed and badged to prove we exist.
Fearful of hugs; afraid to be kissed.
Walking alone in the still of the night;
Passing locked houses of flickering lights;
Dogs in a frenzy alert to this stranger;
Seeing eyes peek to be sure there’s no danger;
Here in the street; or hidden inside;
Who is the enemy; I can’t decide;
Which is the loser; and which of us wins;
The one whos’ locked out: or the one who’s locked in!

I wrote about this in the local paper years ago after my neighbors all had the habit of acting like they didn/'/t see each other and scurrying about to escape saying hello. It/'/s rather disgusting people are so lazy and selfish.
Your poem as usual was very clever and fluid and a joy to read. Your last stanza should give them some pause. We can/'/t help who we can not see....
Bravo as usual!!!!!

brilliant! the phrase I heard today, undisclosed location,
made me think along these lines.
Undisclosed idealistic rose that resides beside its thorny
stem, bred and bred again for color its beautiful fragrance
no longer in the open, its airs not to be smelled for they have been relegated, or even closeted, somewhere, in some undisclosed location, that is neither here nor there.
Softerware I believe you say a lot with this one.
Well done!
Peace!

You have a knack for writing poems like this that I find hard to do. Your poems teach and entertain at the same time and you vary the subject matter with relative ease. Amazing.......

Indeed, and well stated.
We are continually (and sometimes wisely) suspicious of the other/'/s intent, but it doesn/'/t help that our confidence in interactions is continually eroded by media saturation of terrible violence and stranger danger, and the seductive individualism encouraged by virtual alternatives to real interaction.
So the answer is: everybody, except the natural born isolationist and misanthrope. |

Much to think about. I try be friendly to most people, stranger or not. Sometimes you get that look like who the hell are you, or they/'/re friendly back.
As always, your poetry rocks.
Thank you,
Sir Timotheus. |
