When I Ran Away From Me

Contributed by invierno on Tuesday, 3rd November 2015 @ 07:48:29 PM in AEST
Topic: drugabuse

When I ran away from me,
not even peach fuzz on my cheeks;
a life already ruined,
the stuff of mares with scarce a dream;
by the time I was saved
I was already lost,
my heart a pumping mess
of abandoned motions tossed;
trampled on by those
we're supposed to count on when we're young,
I ran away from me
before my life had ere begun.

In the forty years of running
I let loose the core of me;
traded I for liquor and a lie that I was free.
But the steps, they built upon themselves
until wisdom knocked upon the door;
always running tiresome,
that endless search for 'more'.

The first falter in my gait,
remembered clearly in her face;
the moment when I knew I could begin to
stay in place.
But life, the trickster that it is,
had one more laugh on me;
the beauty holding me in sway
was a runner too, you see.

And my Lord, we ran together,
both chasing hard upon the dream;
a sober life, silence and a smile- thirteen years later
(I know it been a while),
both our feet together, at last came to a rest;
our love enough of what we have and stand to lose
the one thing we wouldn't test.

then, The Glorious Drunken Night,
my life, my wife said “No!” to booze....
and we both stopped running.

Written like the pro you are!!!

They say take one day at a time. I pray you two keep on the straight road. I know it's tough and I've lost my brother to alcoholism. So, in that way, as a co-dependent, I can relate.

Thank you for sharing yourself.

Tim

Wow, I am utterly impressed! You have painted a great picture in my mind of the journey you and your wife have been on. It's great to know that you can overcome any obstacle in life; there's always a choice, as you have put it here. Thanks for sharing and God bless,

Deidra

May you never need to run away. You have taken your selfhood back.
"We came at last to rest" is a wonderful mantra. Keep it over your door.
Invierno, welcome home.
