Studying for Retirement

I still get up. I go to work. I still love what I do.
I’ll probably be doing this when I am 72!
I could stay home. I could sleep in; or visit new environments!
But leisure’s not my strong suit; In truth? I flunked retirement!
Some need a reason to get dressed; some need a place to go;
A place where others count on them; and faces that they know!
Some need a witness to their life; and problems to resolve;
And someone who will miss them if they don’t show up at all.
A place where they find value in something they contribute.
Some like to be depended on; it pays their ego tribute.
(I once retired for 10 whole years and took up poems and art;
I cruised, I flew, I partied, I gave it my whole heart.
I organized my rolodex, my closets, and I cooked!
I entertained, I volunteered, my calendar was booked.
My house was clean, my garden lush, my afternoons were lazy;
I wandered round the local malls, my credit cards went crazy.
Til every day was just the same - Sunday, Monday, Friday…
and I was actually contemplating polishing my driveway;)
I realized that retirement may not be a promotion;
And some of us aren’t happy when our backfield’s not in motion!
So when young people tell me that they work just for the money;
And they can’t wait to quit one day, I find it somewhat funny;
That every time that grandkids come to talk of their careers;
They know they must give equal time so we can fill their ears;
(In that unguarded moment when retirement seems contrary):
With stories of those glory days when we were necessary!

Always a lesson (and good ones to boot!) is found in your quick and nimble style.
I've never read a poem of yours I didn't, A. Enjoy and B. learn from.
Thank you, teacher.
