I Met You This Sunday

Contributed by jamesstockdale on Monday, 30th March 2015 @ 09:22:11 AM in AEST
Topic: EmotionalPoetry

I met you this Sunday
On my TV screen
It may have been brief
But I got to know thee in a very special way

I was amazed at your strength
Your will to live
Flourish and succeed
Willingness to just be

I was captured by your soul
Worried all the same
That the candle God lit
Would grow tired and old

You are so young and vibrant
Beautifully free
Far too young
To die at just twenty-three

Although we have never met
I feel for you all the same
I sat and prayed to the powers that be
You would beat this thing and be healthy again.

You touched my heart
Through a TV screen
God works in mysterious ways
I wish you love, life, and longevity

Very tragic, but very well written.

I know the feeling. I've agreed with this sentiment many times, same. I once cried when I was a teenager when I saw a "Gone but not forgotten" mural on the back of someone's window on a pickup truck. To this day, I'm not sure why that one struck such a chord with me, but it truly did.

Great write Jim. :)

"....that the candle God lit

That is one snicker-doodle dandy of a line. Now that I know you've used it, I never can (nor would), darn it all. It's perfect.

The balance of the poem is wonderful; a great retelling of something tragic and you're lining it with hope. Well done.

You could build an entire poem around the sentence I like. It's there. It's a bone in need of flesh.

Best,

Invierno
