When life escapes your firm command;
It’s best to have a second plan!
Before you pull the plug and quit;
May I suggest you sleep on it?
Given time to percolate;
Your plan may find a better fate!
Every story here is true;
Fame from utter failures grew!
Some of our premier inventions;
Rode the wake of failed intentions!
Soggy french fries overlooked;
Were salted, sliced, and overcooked;
By a chef with hands on hips;
The chef's revenge? Potato chips!
A pharmacist made medication;
Which became a fav libation;
You may think it just a joke;
But that’s how we invented Coke!
Mixing soda pop at home;
John left it on the porch alone;
Come morning it was frozen thick;
A Popsicle complete with stick!
When charging a florescent light;
A German scientist got a fright!
From rays that went right through his bones!
He called them “X” for rays unknown!
To make a rust-resistant gun
He thought to mix some chromium;
Harry couldn’t make it seal;
So named his error “stainless steel!”
Leo kept on coming back;
Trying to make man-made shellac;
When he couldn’t get it right;
He called his pink glop Bakelite!
A Russian chemist found this treat;
When his dinner tasted sweet;
The secret was his dirty hands;
Coated still with coal-tar sand!
Had he washed his hands you know;
We wouldn’t have our Sweet & Low!
I’m well equipped with what it takes;
To make such awe-inspiring mistakes!
I daily make a mess or two;
Of something I attempt to do!
And though I look for indications;
Of a purposeful mutation;
When I spill, or burn, or bubble;
It is hardly worth the trouble;
Re-inventing blackened rubble!

Bravo! This is by far and away the most informative poem I have ever read in my life. You need to be on Jeopardy!
Really, really cool! You are so kind to me in comments, and I recall you writing that your poetry doesn't contain the depth you see in other's efforts, but that is not true at all. You have a gift for word craft I seldom see, and in the weaving, you DO present a deeper message.
I found this to be very inspirational, uplifting, and......you got a smile out of me far earlier in the day than is the norm, which is when I see my wife come out from the bedroom.
Bless you.

Absolutely love it and thank you for this veritable wealth of information. And the Sweet & Low...another reason to avoid the stuff.
Thank you,
Sir Timotheus |

When I read other peoples poetry I don't look for spelling mistakes or perfect rhyme scheme. I only know that if I like it I feel like letting the author know that they have a new admirer. Hope to read more of yours in the future. |
