Read The Menu
The day was getting on a bit,
Afternoon was almost gone,
When I felt my stomach telling me,
Supper should be coming on.
I closed my eyes and tried to see,
What the menu had in store.
But everything which came to mind,
Only lead to one thought more.
Should I cook myself a pork chop?
Baked potato with some peas?
Maybe a burger with some fries?
Macaroni with some cheese?
Or perhaps some beans with pork hocks?
Some wieners with sauerkraut?
Fried rice with sweet and sour sauce?
Now my mind was in such doubt.
For desert there is no limit,
To the dishes I could make,
From a simple dish of ice cream,
To a cream pie I could bake.
Now just sitting there daydreaming,
Did not not help my appetite.
My stomach told me hurry up,
Or you'll never get a bite.
Then I remembered half a chicken,
From my lunch the day before.
If I popped it in the oven,
I could heat it up once more.
I turned my oven up real high,
So that it could faster heat.
That way it wouldn't be too long.
Until I sat down to eat
With my chicken in the oven,
Some potatoes I did peel.
I opened up a can of peas,
Set the table for a meal.
For reasons I can not explain,
I never gave a thought,
To the setting of my oven,
Which was getting might hot.
I sliced some bread and made some tea,
As I tended to each chore.
Then everything was going fine,
I had done it all before.
When I thought to check my chicken,
Which I'm sure was warm by now.
I opened up the oven door,
And all I could say was, Wow!
Such a cloud of smoke which hit me,
I began to cough and choke.
Everything looked black and crispy.
My whole house was full of smoke.
The chicken was surly ruined,
But the oven took no harm,
And everything was quiet again,
Once I killed that smoke alarm.
The terrible smell which filled my house,
Let me know without a doubt.
I no longer wanted chicken,
So I threw the whole thing out.
It was twenty minutes later,
When I drove myself to town,
Walked into a restaurant,
Found a table and sit down.
Then waitress came to wait on me,
And before I stopped to think,
I said, “I'll just take the special,
With a pot of tea to drink.”
When she brought me roasted chicken,
There was nothing I could do,
Except make myself a promise,
Next time read the menu through.

Insanely poetic. And insanely relatable.
Best,
