Our Meager 10%

I feel like Neo tonight;
My meager 10% of cranial employment well spent;
suffice I see the light
as white coated 11 percenters argue over the dormant 9/10ths left;
we're smoke, an expired dandelion, yet still our intellect attaches
to our bodies-
a miracle given 90% of our grey matter idles unemployed-
One of ten laps run, our hubris claims (evolutionarily) we're done!
(ten cookies in the jar, one eaten,
“Yummy, No, just one! No time for the other nine-
just this one is more than fine”)
Holding fast
(“How I hold thee, rope of logic”, science worshipers cry at night)
Lab coats swirling much as Rumi in the firelight would.....
in Bizzaro-world,
“We are the final outcome! The genetic flag now full unfurled!”)-
Wow! The zenith of one cell- and all between....to US!
In our wisdom, resting well on this grand 10% synaptic success,
we declare (in our evolving sentience)
Man is the final product-
put away the lab coats, ya'll...
Science has picked up (Shh..don' tell, they've dropped)
the ball.

Interesting lament indeed.
We, who is we, we are whom
I'm thinking like within the closed apostrophe
of entropy with which to deduce a reversal of states
to understand ---
I think your poem is more to the point asking,
Why/ not why is there art, or culture or why there
is empathy
But why is there any need to move away from it
As we seem to do.
Like you, I have teenagers, you know, the frontal lobe is not completely formed so I can find a way to excuse them for their brainless mistakes
But I can't say the same thing for world leaders
Or those who just wish we could all go backwards towards the dark ages.
I'm with you Invierno, we or I should say I use a small percentage of brain matter and not always wisely at that. I am an animal well suited to feel ashamed of such things.
Your poem here is deep and filled with a heck of a lot to think about my friend!
Indeed!
Peace! |

Very very nice. 'Tis interesting you bring this up. Sort of thinking about this a few days back when I saw a trailer for Lucy. I wonder if the rest is for memory storage. I sometimes think that no memory is actually forgotten, we just don't really know how to access them.
Could that be the other 90% of these 1 terabyte thinking membranes? Storage?
I like this and thank you for posting.

Fascinating and thought-provoking. Yep, from one cell to us, and we don't use 90% of our brains. What a waste, indeed. Mind you, the way I'm feeling this morning, I'm probably operating at about 3% capacity. Great write! |

*snicker* Exceptional ending.
In fact, I think this piece as a whole, was well-written. This subject used to fascinate me to no end. It still does, but I have become more cynical over the years, and often doubt most people are even operating at that level.
Tragic, really. I am however still in complete awe at what we are capable of, with our shoddy 10%.
What will be our next level of evolvement? Only time will tell, but the brain is a muscle that needs to be exercised- often.
Like a Border Collie, the brain would love to be exercised deep into the day, everyday. There are good "owners" and bad owners...Sad, but terribly true!!
