Within The Winters Hand

Contributed by lostrelic on Monday, 19th January 2015 @ 02:29:52 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

The cold concrete sparkles as meth heads admire fantasies of endless highs.
As a gentle knock of a shopping cart wheels bounce off smooth sidewalks,
walking in circles to keep warm in these frigid nights.
Another homeless night in Canada.

Soldiers in corners fighting the march on drugs, one flap at a time.
Promising warmth with a prick of steel points.
A pipe has a gentle amber to keep your hands warm.
Singing carols of six with a siren horn wailing.
Keeping the girls of the night addicted to their jobs.
As the officers look the other way, to busy busting kids for a joint.

I am but nineteen, a big city farm boy in a world not my own.
Following those same circles as predators knash their teeth.
Hunting for dark ally mistakes, one path too far.
They will get me one night, I still taste death in my mouth, just not tonight.
The chatter of teeth block out all aspects of sound.
Colds grip strengthens my will to move on.

The beds are either full or filthy to the point.
Crackheads in corners blowing their souls out windows.
Same old tombstones eyes.
One shows me his gun...

See all this was pain.
All in the name of suffering.
I hated the person I was.
Lost in my own hell.
A lostrelic on the road to ruin.
Killing himself slowly, well i thought i was.
Just walking in circles.

Some stories don't come with such happy endings as mine.
Too many friends wasted by roadsides, only looking to ease the pain.
My heart broken from societies mistakes.
No help for those who are considered a burden.
A low mans tale.

We are all looking for a hand up when we hit it low.
Once you hit bottom you just start to not care.
That is why we need you.
Let not my story happen to another.
Never give on each other, it is our strength that will win.
Love breaks through any cold.

Fantastic piece. Imagery was palpable.

Beautifully written, but haunting. Hopefully things have turned for you?
Best
