Typewriter

Cellphones, tablets and mp3s
You clanged and lived by none of these
Most days you sat next to another brother
The first of its kind, a typewriter

It is what gave you traction
And with it you calculated your taxes
Kept track of your social events
And monitored your dollars and cents

In college few things were better
When I went to box 00015 and saw a letter
Comprised of perfect script from your wife
And from you, a one-lined type-written delight

Of typewriters I know not much
Of ems and ink and such
But of this I write with certainty
Your wife and your typewriter with you for eternity

Vintage appreciation at its finest! I've always loved the idea of going back to writing letters and actually using a typewriter (maybe someday). Great writing and God bless,

Deidra

Ah, the old typewriter. The old man brought one home in the 1960's, made me think, it seemed to me back then more like a musical instrument. Click clackety clack clack, ding... All those wonderful keys hitting against the ribbon, inking down the words on the paper.
The old man told me about the type setters of old, how the news papers were put out. The old man wanted to be a newspaper man himself as a boy in the 1930's, he was the editor of the high school paper before going off to war.

But things change. I remember not too long before he died he sat with me in front of my first computer and asked me why I thought it was something so special.

I don't think I did a good job telling him back then, circa
1996.
Your uncle done you good! Thanks for the memory!
Peace!

A must have for any serious writer, I say. I bought an old Remington 'Quiet Riter'..the kind in the permanent carry case. We cannot assume the power grid, the internet, etc will always be here.

Sadly I don't write much poetry (and of my books, none at all) in free-hand any longer...all computer. I was afraid I would lose some magic in my poetry via such a clinical tool as a computer but the two seem to get along just fine.

Thanks for this fine reminder of by-gone days.

Invierno
