a secret land of mist and rain
of Mordor mountains, open plain
sweet wind-whispers on the cheek,
and paths of wonder, should you seek
fiords fit for Northern gods
traverse the wombs of snow-capped peaks
while underfoot, caves of light
show constellations, insect bright
Te Waipounamu, greenstone flows
in songs that weave both love and woes
on windswept coasts and blackened beach,
civilisation out of reach
frozen waters soothe the soul
while trees are burdened by the breeze,
and turquoise lakes reflect a peace
that co-exists with land’s release
a quietude, and in its time,
the warrior’s heart in its prime
of grim visage and mana borne
welcomes the New Zealand morn.
