Liquid Spiders

Contributed by Invierno on Monday, 1st December 2014 @ 10:32:28 AM in AEST
Topic: Grief

My robed wife- a Tuesday, 7 PM.
Standing at the table under the naked kitchen light;
gathered and rowed- one more thing to do,
empty ½ pints, pints, a fifth or two.
“Spiders”, she calls them,
vodka's frozen remnants thawed,
poured drop by drop until full shot
then down her thirsty maw.

I see her from my easy chair,
lost at times in stare- seeing the kitchen
that could have been,
my wife years before...well, then.
But the pot and the kettle are both black,
no saving spiders for me-
At least her sad table arrangement
lends to economy,
so who of us fine pair
are the better or worse alcoholic?

Great post. I reside in the same sort of coupling, and I can tell you with 100% clarity:

The only "better" alcoholic is a sober one. There is zero grey area for dispute. Though, not everyone who leans on the booze crutch is an alcoholic.

Forget trying to help each other. That is a painful and frustrating road. Instead, help yourself. Whatever way you need help- get it. In some situations, helping ourselves first is the only shot we have at helping others.

I really enjoyed this write. Thank you for posting, and sorry for rambling.

Good luck.

I think you can be completely honest here and you have been with this very heartfelt write. While I can't directly relate to the chemical dependency I can relate as a codependent. There probably is no such thing as a better or worse alcoholic. Some just try harder not to be dependent. I agree with The Scorpendous One, "The only 'better' alcoholic is a sober one".

Best regards for you. Great poem...you really put yourself out there.

Tim

This brings back memories of my childhood. today I can deal with them better, but it does not change that my mother was an alcoholic and it eventually killed her. . .I like the style of it any way.

The incredible honesty here shows me that you do not buy any lies. To me that is certainly a step in the right direction. You have much to offer this world. You hsve no idea where your influence will end. Remember That. Good luck.

Brutal honesty. This could not have been easy to write. You begin as an observer and close as a participant. We are limited by what we believe ourselves to be. You are, as I know you, loved, necessary, admired, trusted, gifted, capable, observant, and resourceful. As long you breathe, you have power. Do not decide that you are over quite yet! I can assure you that life has been waiting for you, and there is much becoming left on your table.

I have also lived this through my childhood as a codependent and chose not to use for that reason but I watched addiction rob my family of some of the best of us. Brave write. I hope you find the peace you seek.

Firstly, I think you can be honest here. This is a friendly site with a predominance of empathetic members. Secondly, you stand out as one of the most honest and fearless writers that I have encountered here. As for the Bottled Imps: there are few answers left by empty bottles, and even less happiness. A from-the-gut poem that deserves the utmost respect and admiration.

raw and brutal honesty, yet stated so calmly matter of
fact- this just makes me sad, seeing the kitchen that
could have been...
~my best two cents is don't
compare- identify:: like the story about the alcoholic in
the making- he looks down the bar to the guy last in the
row who's falling off his chair and says to himself ''i'm not
that bad'' ~::yet::~

hugs n' love nessa
