WORK TO DO

I longed to leave my mother’s womb
Months before my birth
The place felt like an Egyptian tomb
Robbed of all its worth
Even before her waters broke
I practised every day
The front crawl and the butterfly stroke
I was impatient that way
For I knew right from the beginning
That I had work to do
And that life would have no meaning
Till I started my search for you.
