I had my first drink of beer at age four
Half a bottle later; I wanted more
At nine, I was at it again
It became my consistent friend
A sloppy twelve; I was caught red-handed
A sociopath gets reprimanded
The tables turned from that day forth,
Bound and eager to stay the course
By age thirteen, I was the vodka queen
Partied all night, and in day rarely seen
By fourteen; just Jamaican rum,
...But rye is what made. me. succumb.
Assault with deadly weapon at fifteen-
Never separated from my canteen,
On my own, a mother disowned,
A stolen childhood was bemoaned.
A crazed lunatic with little remorse-
An unquenched thirst became my best resource
Now devoid of who, what, and when
Or even why it all began.
Fast forward years, from sullied womb life sprung
Sobering moments found in foreign tongue
A fresh resolve to get it right
Not yet mastered, but I just might.

beautiful heartfelt brave honesty, and it rhymes in
perfection to boot! i had beer at four too::it was magical....
not so years later for the adults that allowed it, you and i
would have been hell on wheels together, true tho when
we become parents ourselves things change, our kids are
not going to put anything past us, for we are blessed to still
have our wits about us, not all are so fortunate... it is a special
poet that will put to ink the harsh side of life with such ease,
class and grace as yourself, i respect you immensely,
hugs n' love nessa |

This could not have been easy to write; let alone re-live to do it. You have made your demons rhyme and dance to your tune in this beautifully executed tapestry. The tables turned for me when sarcasm replaced helplessness. Thank you for reminding me how far I have come, and welcome to the journey of a lifetime. Our pasts no longer own us. I so admire that poetry is the vehicle of your victory! May it serve you a well as your words serve us.

It is remarkable to see what you have become!!!! Like they say, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger and you are a living example.
This poem was a bit hard to read because if I saw this happening to a child that damn protect instinct kicks in for me. That gut reaction was rearing its ugly head inside me.
You've come a long way and you definitely earned the title of Scorperrific!!!!
I applaud thee. Great poem too, btw. |

I like this poem because of the reminders it gives me of my childhood. I actually was the opposite- My mom was an alcoholic and the results of our relationship left me resolved to never take a drink. I like the overcoming attitude and resolution of this poem especially the last stanza. |

look at that resolve! This last line gave me goosebumps. I loved reading through this, very captivating. I do hope though that it was mainly a jest. You do have it within you though to overcome whatever/whoever is using you. Addiction is a hell of a thing to battle, and it never delivers. I love reading your poetry. i have said it before, but your word play is superb girly girl.
sorry for the Army of Darkness quote at the end |

Thank you for sharing, it couldn't have been easy. I especially love how you ended the poem-with a hint of relentless positivity. |

It's hard to lay yourself bare for the world to see, the human condition steers us toward hiding anything that can be seen as negative from everyone around.
Is it really a bad thing though to show what was and what is now?
Life is a journey, sometimes we take the less favoured path but if we arrive at the same destination as the rest does it really matter?
Nice write
