Hulks made up greater score of boats for sail
along with coasters tied at Cherbourg pier.
With inner frame for keel, Hulks showed large scale,
the coasters, Helmsmen along coasts did steer.
King Laurence made to use both kinds with cheer,
the knights in huge Hulks, he in coaster least.
That making strait there be but little fear,
England they would celebrate with feast.
His benediction given by a Christian priest.
A stone wall’s seen this day almost complete
around Town Southhampton that makes all pleased.
The River Test is close, south’s quay doth meet
the sea, town by west esplanade is eased.
French wine for English new spun woollen frieze,
imported stone and metalwork is viewed,
and blown glass, pottery from distant seas.
The burgess Spanish trade oftentimes renewed,
but English traders seem always as old and shrewed.

I love the style, word choices and imagery this poem conjures up. What are we talking about here though. I have my own ideas, but what were you thinking about when writing this? |
