As I sit on this park bench, I watch some children chasing pidgens around that cascading water fountain. The one covered in grafitti, with cigarettes and bits paper floating in it. And the ground around it is covered with crumpled up food wrappers and other refuse. And the air is so choked with exhaust fumes from passing busses and other trafic, that you can see the haze of it in the air.
But I sit on my park bench reading my book, and I look up to watch those children play. And I see those wide smiles on their innocent faces, and hear their rich laughter, and I wonder..... How can such beauty exist surrounded by such ugliness
Later as I sit on this park bench, I look up from my book to see those same children shouting obsenities and accusations at a poor, old, homeless man laying on a park bench just down from mine.
And he clutches the crumpled news papers around himself, and tries to hide from the childrens cruel words. And I can hear the pain in his voice as he begs those children to leave him be.... Just leave him be!
And as I sit on this park bench, I see the honey brown and reddish gold leaves falling from the trees, to be caught and sent swirling by a gentle autumn wind. And the sun is filtering down through the softly swaying tree branches. and I can hear the sweet calls of some songbird who hasn't yet flown for warmer lands.
Then I look at these children, and the missery that they are bringing to this poor old man, and I have to wonder..... How can such ugliness exist surrounded by such beauty.

Strange how things change so quickly before your own eyes... it's so sad to watch, but it reminds you to always not to be quick to judge what a person, or even a child, is like on the inside. Great write!

Thank you for sharing this. The world is what we make it. Without the ugliness, there would be nothing to hold up in comparison to the beauty which we all adore. Beauty would cease to exist. I enjoyed this poem immensely. You put into words what we all notice on a daily basis, but generally fail to voice. |

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"...such a wonderful truth. I have learned this lesson well over the years. For a filthy dirty town, may be someone's beloved home. We all take too many things for granted. We all should sit down for a break on some park bench for a break sometime. Stop and take a strong look around at what's going on. Great poem....I really liked it |
